Foreign Languages

cl Spanish 1-2 - 1 Credit

The first year foreign language course enables students to function at a beginner level of proficiency in the four skills of language acquisition: speaking, writing, reading, and listening. Basic grammar structures are learned so that the student can communicate in the present moment in simple survival situations. Cultural aspects of the people and countries where the target language is spoken are explored through a variety of exercises including videos, music, and enrichment activities


 

Spanish 3-4 - 1 Credit Prerequisites: Spanish 1-2

The second year foreign language course expands upon the student's proficiency skills of speaking, writing, reading, and listening with emphasis on describing personal activities in the simple past. Further investigation of the cultural aspects of the people and countries where the target language is spoken are explored.

clSpanish 101 - 1 Credit

Basic grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary of the Spanish language Includes the study of Spanish-speaking cultures Practice of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills


Spanish 102 - 1 credit Prerequisites: SPA101 or departmental approval

Continued study of grammar and vocabulary of the Spanish language and study of Spanish-speaking cultures Emphasis on speaking, reading, and writing skills


Mandarin 1-2

During this course students develop the ability to communicate about themselves and their immediate environment using simple sentences containing basic language structures. This communication is evidenced in all four language skills -listening, speaking, reading and writing - with emphasis on the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Students begin to explore and study the themes of Personal and Family Life, School Life, Social Life, and Community Life. Mid way through this course students learn to function in real-life situations using more complex sentences and language structures. They read material on familiar topics and produce short writing samples. Students continue to explore as they study the themes of Home Life, Student Life, Leisure Time, and Vacation and Travel.

Mandarin 3-4

Students continue to develop and refine their proficiency in all four language skills -listening, speaking, reading, and writing - with emphasis on the ability to interact orally and in writing. They communicate using more complex language structures on a variety of topics, moving from concrete to more abstract concepts. At this level, students comprehend the main ideas of the authentic materials that they read and hear, and they are able to identify significant details when the topics are familiar. Students gain a deeper understanding of the world around them while studying Rights and Responsibilities, Future Plans and Choices, Teen Culture, Environment, and Humanities. The authentic reading selections are emphasized at this level. Students communicate using more complex language structures and express abstract ideas with reasonable fluency. Students are able to create and listen with understanding to reports and presentations. They are also able to describe, summarize and discuss selected upper level POS themes and topics.

Physical Fitness Courses

Women’s Personal Fitness - Credit

This course is designed so that the student explores the dimensions of wellness including: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social, and occupational. Students will study the importance of balancing these components and their interactions. Students will participate in various activities including: yoga, pilates, aerobics, etc.

Physical Fitness/ Health - 1 credit

This course w ill be an introductory physical education class. Students w ill learn and apply components of health-related fitness, proper nutrition and physiology. Students will participate in individual and team sports, and fitness activities, which will include cardiovascular activities, resistance training, and individual fitness assessments. One third of the class will satisfy all Arizona Health standards in health education. Students will learn community health, consumer health environmental health, family life, injury prevention and safety, mental and emotional health, nutrition, personal health, prevention and control of disease, and substance use and abuse.

Advanced Physical Education - 1 credit

T his required course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental concepts associated with health related fitness and leading a physically active lifestyle. Students will engage in a variety of activities related to improving aerobic fitness, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition. Students will also have an opportunity to participate in activities that integrate the five components of health related fitness as well as activities that promote lifetime physical activity.

Yoga - 1 credit

This course will introduce students to beginning yoga asana. Emphasis will be placed on awareness of technique, skill, flexibility, posture, history, knowledge, vocabulary, core strength, and aesthetics of each asana. Students will learn and apply components of health - related fitness. Cardiovascular conditioning will be taught on a regular basis.

Weight Training - 1 credit

This course will cover resistance training and include a variety of exercises, techniques and programs. Students will learn and apply health -related concepts, proper nutrition and physiology. Students will perform correct techniques of core lifts, which m ay include squat and power clean. Cardiovascular conditioning and individual fitness assessments w ill be included.

College Prep Course Descriptions

Warriors 411 - 1 Credit Must be taken freshman year

This course satisfies the Arizona requirement for students Educational and Career Action Plan. Warriors 411 is designed to assist Freshman to be as successful in high school as possible. The class focuses on various study skills and techniques as they relate to different subject areas. Furthermore, the course focuses on the best and most effective use of technologies in relation to different subject areas. The course has a strong focus on positive habit building to be successful not only in high school, but in life.

Video Editing/Web Page Design - 1 Credit

This course provides students with an understanding of: HTML tags, creation and manipulation of graphics, design and layout of web pages, publishing of web pages to the World Wide Web, and editing web pages. Programs used in this course include: MS FrontPage, Adobe Go Live, Adobe Live Motion, and Adobe Photoshop.

Speech & Debate - 1 Credit

This course is designed for students to learn how communication is used in their daily lives and in a variety of careers. Areas to be covered will be: skills for overcoming fear, increasing confidence, enhancing listening skills, and developing organizing strategies through one-to-one communication, group communication, and public speaking. Debate will focus on how to research debate topics and properly communicate their points. Part of the grade will be participating in a live debate competition with other schools.

Journalism/Yearbook - 1 Credit

Yearbook is the student production of a book that covers the activities and people of that school year. This laboratory experience allows students to use their skills in photography, layout, writing, word processing, marketing, and graphic design to produce a yearbook. This course may be repeated for credit. $25 fee is required per year. Students requesting this class must complete the application process before placement.

Introduction to Psychology - 1 Credit Prerequisites: Junior or Senior course only

This course is designed to provide the student with the understanding of human behavior. Topics include: unlocking human potential; physiological psychology; sensation and perception; learning about learning; memory and intelligence; personality theories; and mental and behavioral disorders. This course also includes a brief introduction to psychologists such as Freud, Skinner, and Maslow. Students are required to write one extensive research paper during the course of Psychology.

College & Career: Must be taken Junior or Senior year - 1 Credit

This course is required and to be taken during the junior or senior year. This course focuses on college and career preparation. Some areas of emphasis are: time management, job interviewing techniques, resume writing, scholarship research, career research, teamwork, and team participation and budgeting. These students are responsible for planning Westwind's Career Day and College Fair.

Work/Volunteer Credit - 1 credit 123 hours/ .5 credit 61.5 hours

Students seeking to earn credit with volunteer or work hours outside of the regular school hours may do so. The hours of involvement will be verified by an administrator and management for credit. All hours must be completed within one semester for credit.

CC- English Humanities 117 Rap Literature: The Oral Tradition-1 Credit

Survey of selected rap poetry looking at the oral tradition of Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States as precursors to East Coast, West Coast, Southern, North Central, and International development of the genre Investigation of cultural environments, historical events, competitions (the "battles"), artists' biographies, and parallel art forms as they relate to the analysis of the genre and its themes

CC-PSY101 Introduction to Psychology - 1 Credit

To acquaint the student with basic principles, methods and fields of Psychology such as learning, memory, emotion, perception, physiological, developmental, intelligence, social and abnormal

Fine Arts

Video Production - 1 Credit Prerequisites: Teacher Interview
This course provides students with an understanding of: Pre-production (planning, producing, and scripting stories), Production (cinematography, digital video camera operation, audio voiceover and recording, creating effective sound and lighting, acting, and other filmmaking techniques), and Post -production concepts and applications (digital video editing and software, motion graphics, color correction, and distribution). Programs used in this course include: Final Cut Pro, LiveType, Color, Soundtrack Pro). This course can be repeated for credit. Students requesting this class must complete teacher interview before placement. $25 fee is required per semester.

IB Visual Arts

IB Visual Arts course enables students to build an understanding of Art on many levels, such as, visual and conceptual theories, cultural conditions in which art is made, social aspects, and a personal engagement of the creative process. Studio work and Investigative work will be interconnected. The study of various artworks and styles will aid in the development of ideas for the various themes and approaches to created artwork. Ideas surrounding themes will be evident in the Investigative Workbook. There are five units to the course: Art History, Drawing, Painting, 3-D, and Art and Technology.

Art - 1 Credit

This course introduces to a variety of exciting opportunities in using artistic processes, learn to think conceptually and realize potential as a creative and critical thinker in order to meet the challenges of 21st century living. Explore personal interests while developing skills in the areas of drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and digital media. Course content includes art production, art appreciation, and studies in visual culture. There is a fee to cover the cost of all materials.

Choir - 1 Credit

This beginning, mixed choir course will provide students the opportunity to study literature of all style periods, vocal techniques and musicianship skills. Concert performances will be required. Appropriate performance attire will be required.

Dance - 1 Credit

Students will be introduced to a variety of dance forms that may include jazz, modern, ballet, lyrical, musical theatre, tap, and ethnic. Classes will participate in fitness and conditioning exercises, floor combinations, and dance routines which will develop balance, strength, flexibility, coordination, agility, line and body control, rhythmical accuracy and versatility. Students will receive instruction in composition, improvisation, production, history and performance. Students will develop an appreciation of dance through participation, observation, and self-evaluation

Pre-IB Theatre

Pre-IB Theatre is a rigorous course designed to prepare the IB student for success in the 2 year IB program. The student will be immersed in the planning, presentation, and study of theatre. Focus is placed on a practical and theoretical exploration of a range of theatre traditions and cultural practices around the world.

Drama/Theater - 1 Credit

Designed to introduce the student to the basic elements of theatrical arts, this course includes units on acting, technical theatre, history, directing, and drama as literature. Activities for the class includes pantomime, voice, dialect study, set construction, painting, lights, sound, and play analysis through in-class performance and written work.

WTV (Westwind Television)

1 Credit Prerequisites: Video Production & Teacher Interview This course provides students with an understanding of the overall production process involved in broadcast journalism.  Students will learn to develop and cover stories on and off campus, prepare a studio for taping and reporting, videotape a broadcast, and edit for broadcasting.  A basic understanding of video production is required.  The course is designed to provide a basic foundation for students interested in pursuing video/film production and/or broadcast journalism.  Programs used in this course include: Final Cut Pro, LiveType, Color, Soundtrack Pro, MS Office). This course can be repeated for credit. Students requesting this class must complete teacher interview before placement. $25 fee is required per semester.
