cl Pre IB History 9th Grade

The IB History course is a focused and intensive program, which includes factual, experiential, and source as well as subjective understanding of History through Economics. We will explore economics through different governments, multiple countries, the public and the private sector. We will discuss current events and how these fit into the history and lessons of the past, as well as how the past teaches us about the future. Through a caring and inquisitive structure, students will take on the dynamics of choice from around the world, in attempt to balance the pros and cons of each. A deeper understanding of the details of economics, which can or cannot be ascertained, will be the goal and principle of this reflective program.

This class is going to focus on the political structure of African nations as well as the role of the Cold War. Students will have to produce two independently written essays and participate in numerous discussions as well as reflections upon their own thoughts and how they came to exist. This class will read excerpts from supplementary texts, primary, and secondary sources, allowing us to compare their strengths and weaknesses. This dual topic study will create awareness and understanding of the countries, their governments, and the people, active within the Cold War as well as Africa . The intent of this course is to connect greater events with lesser ones and comprehensively draw conclusions which require risks to be taken, knowledge to be acquired, and minds to be opened beyond their normal scope and spectrum.

clHistory Exploration - 1 Credit

History Exploration is an introductory course which covers a broad range of historical skills and concepts. This course is an introduction to Social Sciences. Students will cover archeology, geography, history, genealogy, and anthropology. Students will explore their own history as well as the history of the State and Community in which they live. All Arizona state history standards will be presented and discussed within this 1 credit class.



clWorld History - 1 Credit

This course provides the students with an understanding of: history of humankind and development of civilizations from prehistory to the 20th century; emphasis on the cultural, social, political, and economic developments; impact of individual personalities in world history; and relationship of past events to current world situations.

 

clU.S. History - 1 Credit

This survey course provides the students with an understanding of: native American cultures and colonization; establishment of U.S. government; industrial revolution; westward expansion and settlement; review of American cultural, political, and economic growth; and US military involvement from the Civil War period to present.



clAmerican Government/Economics - 1 Credit

This required course will examine fundamental principles and structures of American national and state governments and civic responsibilities. Students will follow the creation of governments from the Romans and Greeks to the Arizona city structure that impacts them directly. Economics will be incorporated into the semester placing a large emphasis on consumer economics and personal finance. Students will gain valuable practical knowledge in economics and government.

clStudent Government

Student Government is a course which allows students to participate in the democratic process and represent the student body while working with students, teachers, administrators, and other adults in the community. Students will learn leadership and teambuilding skills through active participation in a variety of exercises, games, and school projects. Students will gain additional skills in communication, decision-making, conflict resolution, and learn the importance of goal setting and follow through. Service learning is another important part of this class. Finally, attention is given to personal growth through feedback and reflection.

Criminal Justice is an elective course designed to provide the student with a basic understanding of the concepts, processes and institutions of the Criminal Justice system; to provide an understanding and appreciation of how laws work to meet human problems; and how interpretations of laws change to meet the needs of a changing social order. This course will include such topics as the juvenile justice system, courts, law enforcement, and careers in criminal justice, corrections, and the background to the criminal justice system.

 

clSociology - 1 Credit

This course examines the basic nature of human relationships, customs, institutions, social structure, and culture. The class teaches the basic concepts, methods and perspectives of sociology as a social science; and it uses them to consider such topics as family life, groups and organizations, sex and age roles, minorities and social classes, religious and political movements, and social problems.

 

clGeography - 1 credit

The goal of geography is to provide an understanding of the human and physical characteristics of the Earth’s places and regions. Students will examine how people of different cultural backgrounds interact with their environment. They will understand how the United States and the students’ community are affected by conditions and events in both near and distant places. Students will learn to analyze locations, places, and their relationships.
